All the World’s a Stage

(Update, June 12: All the World’s a Stage has now moved to an outdoor theater.)

When I was visiting Iowa City recently I ran across one of two BookMarks statues I created, inside the Iowa City Public Library! Last year artists created 25 statues which were publicly displayed and then auctioned in November to benefit area libraries.

All the World’s a Stage was originally installed at the Coralville Center for the Performing Arts, but I found it at the public library at 123 S. Linn St. in Iowa City. My other BookMarks statue was based on the book Home by author Marilynne Robinson. I’ll let you know if I find out where it has turned up!

Finished sculpture at Sacred Heart School

Slumped acrylic sculpture at Sacred Heart School

Slumped acrylic sculpture created at Sacred Heart School

Pictured here is one of the five slumped-acrylic sculptures we created at Sacred Heart School in April (I took pictures outside so there’s a lot of glare). Students of all ages from kindergarten through 8th grade worked on creating the squares within the figures, with symbols of knowledge, discipline, morals, service, and faith.

The sculptures were hung for the 8th grade graduation ceremony, situated so that students can come by and find their square. Years from now they can come back to visit the school and see their work.

Many thanks to art teacher Beth Titman and all the students for a wonderful experience!

Setting up in Fairfield

Setting up exhibit in Fairfield

Director Suzan Kessel and crew putting up the show

I took some of my work to Fairfield, Iowa last week for an exhibit (“Painting on Paper and Beyond”) at the Fairfield Art Association’s Main Gallery, in the Fairfield Arts & Convention Center. The exhibit runs through June 29, 2012 and is open during the Center’s business hours and during special events. I’ll also be teaching a workshop at the Fairfield Art Association’s Studio in late June.

Fairfield is a delightful small town with beautiful old homes. It’s filled with galleries, and good food including a variety of international restaurants. Worth a trip!

Celebrating a baptism for Baby Jolie.

She was born in the year of the dragon, so I made her a baby blanket hanger for her new room, designed as a dragon (note Jolie inside!).

Creating sculpture at Sacred Heart School

Slumped acrylic sculpture with image/symbol squares

Slumped acrylic sculpture with image/symbol squares

I’m looking forward to working with art teacher Beth Titman and the students at Sacred Heart School!

The children are creating squares (painting and drawing on slumped acrylic) that will bolt onto a slumped acrylic figure, to be a permanent installation at the school. There will be five figures in total, each approx. 24″ x 36″, with about 20 squares of the students’ work on each.

The squares will contain images/symbols of knowledge, discipline, morals, service, and faith.

Making a tablecloth with memories

Printing on repurposed fabric from clothing

Printing on repurposed fabric from clothing

Using clothing that had belonged to her mother, Mary Beth printed on the fabric (pictured here) and then used it in making a tablecloth for her family reunion this summer.

The family can be reminded and talk about the memories represented in the squares of the tablecloth.

Hat celebrating my daughters

Hat made with memories of good times raising three little girls

Here’s a close-up of a hat including a picture of my three daughters when they were little (one toothless!). For their birthdays, each one is getting a hat.

People have been excited about the “memories of…” hats and coming up with all kinds of ideas to bring into them.

The Left Bank Studio on KCCI-TV

Vertical baby grand piano with work space

At the Left Bank Studio, vertical baby grand piano with painting workspace for watercolors and other creations

We had a great time last week when Mollie Cooney and the KCCI-TV crew stopped in to take a look at the studio. Mollie didn’t know what to focus on for a five-minute interview, there is so much going on! Some of the camera crew had been up since 4:30 so I quickly served up a simple brunch, and dessert (on a shoe, of course!).

It was a lot of fun being interviewed and the segment will air on KCCI-TV (Des Moines Channel 8) on Sunday morning, April 1, 2012 between 7 a.m. and 8 a.m.

Mollie was familiar with my watercolors but the slumped acrylic was new and exciting to her. She said she has enjoyed watching the multimedia change over the years, and is looking forward to seeing us at the State Fair. Many thanks to Mollie and crew for such an enjoyable interview!
