2012 Iowa State Fair

Booth in the Cultural Center at the 2012 Iowa State Fair

We had a wonderful booth at the Iowa State Fair this year—we had an area about 35′ long and 6′ deep. You can get an idea of the space from the photo at right.

The Fair is totally different than a gallery show. You get to talk to everyone from all over the world, many of them attending because of the agricultural theme, which we incorporated into some of our artwork. I kept hearing that people hadn’t seen anything like this much cultural content in other state fairs they’d attended. (Of course, we were located in the Cultural Center!)

We did demonstrations at regular times throughout the day. This encourages people to come into the booth, and we give them a little instruction. This photo shows the “day shift” doing a painting demonstration—Karen is painting sunflowers, Pam is painting a pig, and I’m painting a cow. Part of the time I demo’d slumping acrylic—I put mittens on audience members and let them try it.

A couple of young boys stopped by who had just won first place with their pigs, so I helped them “slump” an acrylic pig! They were excited from the win and I interviewed them for KHOI’s youth radio show, and learned about what it’s like to grow up on a farm. Their big brothers and sisters taught them how to clean and guide the animals to show them in a professional manner.

Eyesight update

My cataract surgery yesterday went well! My doctor knows I am an artist as I explained all the abstract shapes I was seeing during surgery while they put my fancy lens in my eye. I was a little loopy with the sedative but my daughter said I was funny – since I’m used to working with plastic, I had a plan to blow-torch my glasses to remove the now-unneeded lens from the frame. Instead my friend Bonnie took me to Pearle Vision later and they took the lens out of the glasses on that side, which looks a little funny but is certainly doable as I wait for the other eye to receive a new lens in September.

My vision on that side is awesome now, and the colors are magnificent. The bad part is I have WRINKLES, never saw them before so I will have to smile a lot! I can’t wait to paint, maybe no more black lines around things. Thanks to everyone who has been wishing me well!

Bossy going to the Fair

Bossy the Cow pillow by Jo Myers-Walker

This is Bossy the cow. According to my friend Dave, she wants to be an engineer. She can’t decide what color to be, so she’s trying on a few different ones for the Fair!

People from everywhere go to the Iowa State Fair, and you get to see a real slice of humanity. Farmers (after asking me what I was “on” when I painted that color of animal!) talk to me about their livestock, and we agree that they are beautiful creatures. I hope to record some of the stories of the folks who stop by the booth.

Just like my studio in Gilbert (Update from the future: I’ve sold the little bank in Gilbert, and now I’m based in Iowa City), our booth at the Fair is like no other! Among my friends and I there are six or seven different media presented in an inviting boutique, with demonstrations throughout the day. Update August 20, 2012: This year’s Iowa State Fair is over. Thank you to everyone who stopped by!

Art in Arnolds Park report

Chicken painted pillow by Jo Myers-Walker

Chicken painted pillow (painting on fabric)

Saturday was a most relaxing day for Art in the Park at Arnolds Park. Sister Water was present with refreshing, beautiful colors to help with my meditation. People were out boating, barbecuing, or walking around, some swimming or playing volleyball.

The people who bought this pillow raise chickens and thought that this one looked like one of theirs. The paintings start a dialog and everyone tells me the most interesting stories. They tell me that chickens are smart. Some people who vividly remember their fear of being scratched while collecting eggs as a child, are now getting chickens in their own back yard in town!

Preparing for the Fair

These girls are getting ready for the State Fair. They’ll be happy to get out of the vault for a while! They’re painted on fabric so they’ll be pillows or wall hangings. Of course the birds wanted to come along, so they’ll be there too. I’m adding some new-found friends – come see me at the Fair to meet them!

Update August 20, 2012: This year’s Iowa State Fair is over, but I hope to see you there next summer!

Ocean memories

This photo arrived attached to an email from a young man who had bought the painting at an estate sale, looked me up from the signature and asked if there is a story to go with it.

As I told him, this painting is from the 1970’s, when I was living at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, with a Marine husband and two little girls. Having grown up in Iowa, I was intrigued with the ocean and its transparent blue-green water, and would snorkel out past the reef.

It was a nice surprise to hear back from one of my creations in its travels!

Drawing to structure a story

Greetings from Radijojo

Greetings from Radijojo

The KHOI Youth Radio Project has established partnerships with Ames Public Library, and with Radijojo World Children’s Radio Network based in Berlin (link is to Google-translated page). The picture at right includes some drawings the children in Berlin sent to welcome the Iowa children (U.S. fans of Shaun the Sheep will note that he is a truly international star!).

On July 14 KHOI and Ames Public Library teamed up to offer a workshop for kids to “Tell Your Story on the Radio.” Some participants drew pictures sequencing the events in a story (storyboarding, pictured below), and some did the writing. For those interested in working with the computer or microphone, we showed them how to record and edit the stories.

Storyboarding is used to outline stories not only for talking on the radio, but also for book writing, movies, and video. We’re using the same technique with KHOI’s Porch Stories – it helps people organize their thoughts.

Since we don’t speak German, we’re returning the favor to the children in Germany by sending them our storyboard drawings.

Garden Art Fair 2012

Painted fabric wall hangings by Jo Myers-Walker

Painted fabric wall hangings

The weather was wonderful for last Sunday’s Garden Art Fair at Reiman Gardens. Sara Merritt and I shared a booth – you can visit Sara’s website at saramerritt.com.

Pictured: I’m repurposing long coats I painted and dyed 25 years ago. I have stretched the painted fabric over wooden stretchers for wall hangings, and had these two at the Garden Art Fair. Lots of fun to have them back!

Drawing tools exercise

The first lesson we did in Drawing and Composition class was to draw the tools we’d be using! I’ll show you some more of our exercises (including upside-down drawing) in an upcoming newsletter. The class will have a display of their artwork at The Left Bank Studio when the course is done.
