Farmers’ Market report (June 23)

Piano repurposed as a work table

Piano repurposed as a work table, used to display artwork at The Left Bank Studio

Farmers’ Market last Saturday was a little rainy but full of surprises and wonderful conversations. Quite a few people turned out and it was exciting to make a lot of new connections for KHOI Community Radio, and for people interested in the “bank” building. I was showing some of my painting on fabric – pillows, bags, and a wall hanging (the one featured in this photo). I always have bird prints, watercolor cards, and some originals for sale. The next time I’ll have a booth at Farmers’ Market is July 14 – I hope you’ll plan to stop by then!

Working together for youth radio

Jo, Wolfgang, and Ursula at NFCB conference

Part of last week I was in Houston at the 37th Annual Community Radio Conference organized by the National Federation of Community Broadcasters. I’ve been working with the Youth Radio Project at KHOI, which has partnered with Radijojo World Children’s Radio Network (based in Germany; link is to Google-translated page) so that KHOI children can talk to other children all over the world. I was pleased to meet Wolfgang Fischer of Radijojo, shown here at the conference with me and Ursula Ruedenberg of KHOI. I also attended workshops on programming, fundraising, and speaking on-air, and met other folks doing youth radio throughout the U.S.

All the World’s now at an outdoor stage

BookMarks sculpture at Riverside Theatre Festival Stage

BookMarks sculpture at Riverside Theatre Festival Stage

The BookMarks statue “All the World’s a Stage” has moved again, to a theater, appropriately!

It’s now backstage at the Riverside Theatre Festival Stage in Iowa City’s Lower City Park, where Riverside Theatre in the Park offers outdoor performances of Shakespeare plays in June and July. I’m told this will be a permanent home for the sculpture.

The plaque (shown below) states that it was donated by Gregory P. and Barbara Morse Black, in memory of Betty Campbell Morse. The statues were auctioned to benefit Iowa City UNESCO City of Literature, Iowa City Public Library, Coralville Public Library, and North Liberty Public Library.

This BookMark came up missing some of its parts (the added-on slumped acrylic) after its previous public installations. The flute-playing nymph has been removed from the top of the book, and two of the figures are missing hands they were using to gesture. I’d love to repair those in the future.

Going to Gilbert?

US Highway 69 symbol

Part of U.S. Hwy. 69 that goes past Gilbert was closed during summer 2012, but is now open

Update 2013: I’ve sold the little bank in Gilbert, and now I’m based in Iowa City. Check out my blog to see what I’m doing these days!)

Update August 23, 2012: US Highway 69 is now open for you to get to Gilbert from either north or south, and it looks like the resurfacing project has been completed! I’m keeping these instructions posted for the G.W. Carver Ave. alternative route, since it’s such a nice drive.

* * * * *

If you’re going to Gilbert from Ames, you can take G.W. Carver Ave. north instead – it’s a scenic drive and actually could be shorter, since it comes out closer to Gilbert at Co. Rd. E23.

If you go west on Bloomington Rd. to the west side of Ames, Bloomington turns into G.W. Carver Ave. and curves north. Then (from the Gilbert Gazette): “Follow Carver (R50) about three miles north to the stop sign and turn right onto E23. Travel a half mile east. Once in Gilbert, E23 becomes Mathews Drive. Turn left just before the railroad crossing onto Main Street.”

If you’re heading from a different direction, or just like to see things on a map first, you can find Gilbert on Google Maps.

Farmers’ Market report (June 9)

Booth at the Ames Main Street Farmers' Market, June 9, 2012

Booth at the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market, June 9, 2012

We had beautiful weather (in the shade!) for the Ames Main Street Farmers’ Market on June 9. In this picture I’m talking with Andi Smith (a fellow volunteer for KHOI Radio), and a volunteer with the Farmers’ Market.

I talked to so many people about putting the “bank” building up for sale – I’m not disappearing! (Maybe more like a phased retirement.) There was some interest in the new pillow kits, but also in buying completed pillows, which I hadn’t expected.

ArtWalk report 2012

Chocolaterie Stam was packed last Friday for the downtown Ames ArtWalk – as Pam McKenna put it, “I think the whole town of Ames was downtown!” Besides the artwork exhibits, face painting was available, and three different wineries represented at Stam (in addition to their usual outstanding candy and other treats). I handed out information about my classes, and watercolor paintings available.

Thanks to Pam for these photos of her, Bonnie Dix, and me during the event, and thanks to everyone who attended, and to Chocolaterie Stam for hosting us in their wonderful environment.

(Pam has a new blog started – I look forward to seeing more!)

Birthday party project

Painted chair

Painted chair

I’m repurposing five of these chairs by spraying them white and adding decorative shapes, and taking them to my granddaughter’s birthday party where about twenty 14-year-olds will decorate them with paint and then donate to a local shelter (I’ve put my touches on this one to get them started). I think it’s beautiful that young women would enjoy an activity that will benefit others, rather than focusing entirely on receiving for themselves.

This might be a good project for you and your kids or grandkids to do together! You can think of things to create or repurpose at home, plus I’m offering “Grandma Camp” again this summer for people who’d like a creative outing with their grandchildren.

Bank building news

125 Main Street, Gilbert, Iowa

125 Main Street, Gilbert, Iowa

Update:
I’ve sold the little bank in Gilbert, and now I’m based in Iowa City. Check out my blog for what I’m doing these days!

Original post:
You might notice from local real estate listings that the “bank” building in Gilbert (where I have my studio) is currently on the market. I plan to continue teaching in the area, whether at my own building or other locations. I’ve been seriously thinking of retiring in some way, though, and want to continue my Franciscan journey. By not being attached to a building I would have more freedom to follow my spiritual passion. This still includes artmaking (often with others)!

I’ll keep you posted on any developments, and you can contact [redacted] if you’re interested in a distinctive classic building.
